Matthews is a small town situated just southeast of Charlotte with an active town center, various shopping centers, lively community events, and a wide range of housing options.
The downtown Matthews area is located along Trade Street, where you will find a variety of restaurants. This includes local favorites like Santé, Kristopher’s, and Cafe 157. Santé is an intimate place featuring more upscale food that is perfect for a date night. Sports fans can enjoy the game at Kristopher’s with uniquely named burgers and sandwiches. Cafe 157 is an American bistro with a more relaxed atmosphere and a varied menu with something for everyone.
On Saturday mornings, head over to the Matthews Farmers Market and try out fresh produce from the area’s small, local farmers. In the Spring, go see the baby chicks at Renfrow Hardware and pick up some heirloom seeds while you’re there. Matthews Alive is great family event that takes place downtown over Labor Day weekend near Stumptown Park and the fire station . Filled with games, rides, craft vendors, and the obligatory funnel cake, the event’s proceeds help non-profit groups in the area. Other helpful Matthews’ links include the Matthews Playhouse for local theatre events and the Matthews Athletic & Recreation Association (MARA) for youth sports teams.
There are housing options in Matthews to fit almost every lifestyle. For an easy, low-maintenance option, there are many two-story townhome communities including Avington and Park Place. The popular single-level “pinwheel” plans are available in St. Andrews, which is within walking distance to shopping, as well as Polo Club at Weddington, which is in walking distance to Francis Beatty Park. Single-family neighborhoods vary in price range depending on location, size, and condition of the homes. A few of the Matthews area subdivisions are Deerfield Creek, Matthews Plantation, Providence Hills, Thornblade, Elizabeth Place, and Sardis Forest. Matthews has many different school zones to choose from, so keep that in mind if you have a specific preference.
